What is thin eyelid skin?
When the eyelid skin becomes thin, it may take on a finely wrinkled appearance, similar to that of crepe paper. Thin eyelid skin may also sag or feel loose and noticeably more fragile than skin on other parts of the face and body.
What causes thin eyelids?
The skin around the eyes is naturally thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the face. With age, a loss of collagen and elasticity inevitably results in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes. On top of that, this collagen reduction can also lead to veins showing through the eyelids, prominent dark circles and puffiness around the eyes.
A number of factors can influence the formation of thin, crepey skin on the eyelids. These may include:
- Sun damage – UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to loosening, thinning and wrinkling in the delicate eyelid skin.
- Dehydration – a decrease in oil production can can cause thin, crepey skin.
- Tugging or pulling – the skin of the eyelid is thinner and more delicate, making it more prone to insult. Rubbing, pulling and tugging can cause damage and further thinning to the eyelid.
- Blinking – while a normal body function, blinking does result in the overuse of the thin-skinned eyelids, leading to a crepey appearance.
Are you concerned by the appearance of thin, uneven eyelids? Depending on the condition of your eyelids, we can help restore a more youthful appearance using a number of medical grade technologies. Here at Dr Anh’s Medispa, we offer a number of treatments to minimise a crepey appearance, including:
Dermal fillers for thin eyelids
Dermal fillers are designed to fill in creases and restore volume in the skin. When injected into the skin, dermal fillers stimulate the growth of collagen, working to improve the appearance, texture and thickness of the eyelids.
PRP for thin eyelids
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments use the plasma from your own blood to rejuvenate the skin. When injected back into the skin, growth factors in your blood will stimulate cellular repair and collagen production. This will tighten the skin around the eyes, providing a more youthful appearance.
Thermage for thin eyelids
Thermage treatments use radiofrequency technology to gently heat underneath the skin, stimulating the production of collagen. When used on the eyelids, Thermage treatments can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and tighten any droopiness for a younger and rejuvenated eyelid appearance.
Fraxel for thin eyelids
Fraxel laser resurfacing treatments use lasers to heat the deeper layers of the skin, encouraging collagen growth. When performed on the eyelids, this results in tighter, thicker eyelid skin and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles.
