What are stretch marks?
Stretch marks are a highly common skin concern. Characterised by long, narrow streaks, stripes or lines that develop on the skin, stretch marks form when the skin is suddenly overstretched. Stretch marks are usually red or purple in colour when they first appear, before fading to a silvery white over time.
Stretch marks can develop anywhere on the body, however the most common areas affected include the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, flanks and buttocks. Stretch marks are particularly common in adult women, although men and teenagers can also be affected.
Stretch marks may not be harmful, however they can cause issues with self-confidence. While stretch marks do gradually fade and become less noticeable, this can often take years.
What causes stretch marks?
Stretch marks form as a result of extreme skin growth, usually due to pregnancy, puberty or rapid weight gain. In fact, stretch marks are commonly associated with pregnancy, with over 50 percent of women developing them whilst pregnant.
When our skin stretches rapidly, the collagen bundles in the deeper layers tear away from each other. This causes the blood vessels to become visible through the upper layers of skin, appearing as stretch marks.
Unwanted stretch marks don’t need to leave a permanent mark. No matter the location or age of your marks, we can visibly reduce their appearance using a number of medical grade technologies. Here at Dr Anh’s Medispa, we offer a number of treatments to restore your skin’s texture, including:
EnCurve for stretch marks
enCurve is a radiofrequency based treatment system that promotes skin tightening and fat reduction. Using controlled heatwaves to penetrate the tissues, enCurve stimulates the production of collagen. This works to help the skin regain elasticity, which in turn reduces the appearance of stretch marks.
Dermapen for stretch marks
Dermapen microneedling treatments produce tiny micro punctures in the skin, which triggers the natural healing and rejuvenation process. By encouraging the production of collagen, Dermapen treatments break down stretch mark scars and give the skin a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Thermage for stretch marks
Thermage uses radiofrequency technology to re-strengthen the collagen fibre structures in the epidermal layers that provide support to our skin. This is done by gently heating the dermal layer of the skin, which triggers the body’s natural renewal process and encourages collagen production. This results in an improvement in the appearance of stretch marks.
Fraxel for stretch marks
Fraxel laser treatments can be used to treat both new, red stretch marks, and older marks that have faded. During treatment, laser light is absorbed into the deeper layers of skin, which stimulates collagen production. This triggers the skin to replace the old damaged skin with newer layers of healthy, stretch mark-free skin.
PRP for stretch marks
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments use the plasma component in your own blood to improve skin texture. When injected back into the skin, the platelets in your plasma encourage the release of growth factors, which aids in collagen regeneration. An increase in collagen will help to thicken the skin, reducing the appearance of stretch marks.
