What are smile lines?

Smile lines, otherwise known as accordion lines, are the slightly curved vertical lines that form outside the corners of the mouth. These lines are most pronounced when you are smiling.

Over time, the skin around the mouth may become slack, leaving smile lines visible even when the facial muscles have relaxed. While accordion lines are completely normal and demonstrate a sign of constant smiling (which is a good thing), these lines can become deeply ingrained and contribute to an aged look.

What causes smile lines to appear?

CAs we age, facial changes inevitably take place and wrinkles gradually begin to appear. Collagen production starts to slow, leading to a loss of elasticity and facial fat, which contributes to the formation of accordion lines.

Additionally, constant facial movements, such as smiling, cause the skin to become lax, creating accordion lines. Smiling, while a good thing, wears down the tissue around the mouth, leaving behind permanent creases that remain even when you aren’t smiling.

Other factors that contribute to smile lines include genetics, smoking, sun damage and sleeping positions.

Our solutions

Wanting to smooth out your smile lines? Depending on the severity of your facial creases and any other skin concerns, we can help minimise accordion lines using a number of medical grade technologies. Here at Dr Anh’s Medispa, we offer a number of treatments to reduce wrinkles around the mouth, including:

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a cosmetic injectable treatment designed to fill in creases and restore volume in the skin. When injected around smile or accordion lines, dermal fillers work to smooth out the lines and make the surrounding skin appear plumper.

Fraxel laser resurfacing treatments work by applying points of light to deeply penetrate the skin. This activates the skin’s natural healing process, which works to smooth out wrinkles and tighten the skin. Fraxel treatments are capable of correcting many fine lines and wrinkles, including accordion lines.

Chemical peels for smile lines

Undergoing regular chemical peels is a great way to rejuvenate the skin and help fade deep smile lines. During a chemical peel a solution will be applied to the skin that causes the outer layers to peel, revealing smoother, line-free skin.

Exilis skin tightening treatments combine ultrasound and radiofrequency waves to gently heat beneath the surface of the skin. Over time, the body’s natural production of collagen will increase, which will in turn tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of accordion lines.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments use the plasma from your own blood to rejuvenate the skin. To treat smile lines, PRP will be injected to the target area. Over time, collagen production will regenerate, in turn softening wrinkles and filling in accordion lines.

Dermapen skin needling treatments involve puncturing small holes in the skin with thin needles. By creating these micro-injuries in the skin, the body is encouraged to reproduce and repair the damaged skin through production of collagen and elastin. The result? Smoother, less-lined skin.
