Our plastic surgeon Dr Anh and her team of cosmetic and medical professionals can help you achieve the shape you desire using advanced technology and years of experience. We utilise two different types of liposuction so you can achieve optimum results, these include Liposoft and suction-assisted liposuction, each of which has different pros and cons.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction refers to the removal of excess fat with a suction cannula through small incisions. Fat can be removed from areas with high fat content including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, under the chin, knees and neck, all without the need for large incisions or extensive downtime.

The procedure is designed to help recontour the body and create a shapelier physique on an already healthy individual who is close to their goal weight. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, usually as a day procedure.

The average liposuction procedure takes about 1 – 2 hours to complete but this will depend on the size and number of areas that will be treated. If a local anaesthetic is used, some additional time will be required for the fat to become numb before Dr Anh can go ahead.

It’s important to note that liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss. It is, however, an excellent body contouring tool.

Liposuction Candidates

The ideal candidate for liposuction will be healthy and have achieved or at least be close to their ideal weight. It’s also recommended that liposuction patients refrain from smoking in the weeks leading up to and after their procedure as this can affect the healing process. Smoking directly impacts the health of the blood vessels, which are essential during recovery. It’s essential that patients have realistic expectations about what can be achieved and a clear idea of the areas they want to target.

Liposuction Aftercare

Following your liposuction procedure, a special foam dressing is applied to the treated area together with a form-fitting garment that is worn to reduce the bruising and swelling that can occurs after liposuction. It is recommended that this compression garment be worn both day and night for at least 4-6 weeks after a liposuction treatment for the best results.

It’s safe for patients to start engaging in light exercise such as walking a day or two after their procedure as this can help the body heal more rapidly. Keeping the area clean is also essential but Dr Anh will provide you with very specific aftercare instructions following your procedure.

As the name might suggest, Liposoft is a gentler form of traditional liposuction – it also doesn’t require a general anaesthetic. The Liposoft system is able to offer much less downtime while still producing similar results. To achieve the desired outcome, fluid is injected into the treated area in order to soften the fat before it’s removed. From there, a cannula is inserted to break up and remove the fat. Any excess fluid will still need to be drained for several days after the procedure.

Suction-assisted liposuction can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including gynecomastia, lymphedema, extreme obesity, lipomas and lipodystrophy. During the procedure, a cannula is used to break up and suction out unwanted fat through an incision. The ultrasonic energy that is emitted is what helps soften the fat before it is extracted. A slightly longer incision is required for this specific type of liposuction procedure.

Undergoing a liposuction treatment does not mean that you should stop eating healthily and exercising on a regular basis. The excess pockets of fat may have been removed from a specific area but it is still possible for new fat cells to form in other areas should you gain weight after your procedure.

If a relatively small area was treated, it will be possible to go back to work within a few days. However, if a larger or multiple areas were treated, it’s recommended that you take about 10 days off work to fully recover.

Antibiotics will be necessary to keep any potential infections at bay and you will need to start taking them on the day of your procedure. You may also receive a prescription for pain medication to make your recovery more comfortable.

Small incisions will be required to complete the liposuction procedure. The incisions are placed around the areas where the fat will be removed but because they are so small, they heal very quickly and are hardly noticeable.

Skin is elastic, which means it has the ability to shrink and adapt to your new contours. However, in the event that your skin elasticity in the treated area has diminished, additional surgical and non-surgical procedures can be added to your treatment plan to achieve your desired outcome. Thermage FLX, which uses fraxel laser technology, is one treatment that you can consider for skin tightening.

Most liposuction patients are anything from 20 to 80 years of age. If a patient is in good health and meets all other requirements for this procedure, there’s no reason why Dr Anh won’t be able to perform liposuction on them.

Pain and discomfort can easily be managed with either a local or general anaesthetic, which will be administered prior to your procedure. Most patients are able to manage the discomfort well and pain medication will be prescribed to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

While bruising and swelling are always going to be potential side effects of this procedure, newer liposuction techniques are designed to keep these effects to a minimum. Any bruising and swelling that occurs will subside within a week or two. Deep bruising is also possible if certain areas such as the neck are treated but massage and pain medication can help alleviate this. It’s also not uncommon for there to be some fluid weeping at the incision sites a day or two after the procedure. Any numbness that is experienced will also only be temporary. Dr Anh does offer lymphatic massage sessions at an additional cost that can help the healing process.

Yes, this is possible. In many instances, patients choose to use the excess fat from a liposuction procedure to fill in any facial wrinkles and depressions. Because the fat is nutrient-rich it has a revitalising and rejuvenating effect. The breasts are another area that can be filled using fat from this procedure. You can speak to Dr Anh about your options during your consultation. Just keep in mind that adding fat grafting to your liposuction session may change the procedure as well as the recovery requirements entirely.

FAQs - Liposuction Perth

A study in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal (*PRS – April 2012) comparing the results of VASER (Vibration Amplification Sound Energy at Resonance) liposuction with suction-assisted liposuction showed a very small advantage of the VASER in terms of greater skin retraction and slightly less blood loss but a slightly higher rate of complications such as pain, swelling and numbness. Whilst the results showed a statistically significant advantage of the VASER, there was no clinically relevant difference between the two modalities of liposuction, as patients and observers could not tell the difference in results between the two types of liposuction. Irrespective of the modality of liposuction used, the ultimate results depend on the skill and experience of the surgeon using it.

Maintaining your new shape is just as important…

It is important to remember that undergoing a liposuction treatment is not going to eliminate the need to eat healthily and exercise regularly for the rest of your life. Liposuction will merely remove some of your fat for a slenderer appearance.
