What’s involved in a breast augmentation procedure?
Breast enhancement is a surgical procedure. It involves placing silicone implants into the breast. This will increase the volume and projection of the breasts.
Dr Anh will discuss all your options at your consultation. The specifics of your breast augmentation will depend on many factors:
- The look that you are trying to achieve
- Your lifestyle
- Personal preference
- What is suitable for your body shape and build
The first step is to establish if you are a candidate for breast surgery. Dr Anh will assess your reasons for wanting to undergo plastic surgery. Following Dr Anh’s assessment, you will receive a customised treatment plan.
A word of caution on overseas cosmetic surgery:
We repair lots of botched jobs
Some breast surgery patients have opted for cheap procedures overseas. Unhappy with the results, they come in to have their botched boob jobs repaired. There can be many health risks of having cosmetic surgery abroad.
The medical risks
Many countries’ medical regulations aren’t as strict as Australia’s. These regulations exist to keep you safe and healthy. Having a breast enlargement in a less sterile environment increases the risk of infection. Even scarier, your surgeon may not have trained to perform the surgery. You can end up with results far from what you had envisioned. We have all heard the horror stories of things going wrong with cosmetic surgery tourism:
- People losing their nipples
- Terrible infections
- Allergic reactions to cheap products
- Even death
While you may save now, but you’ll pay later
If that’s not enough to deter you, consider that you could end up spending way more money. The money you save on a cheaper breast augmentation procedure is at risk of being spent tenfold. It’s expensive dealing with medical complications of an incorrectly done surgery. Therefore it’s also expensive to repair botched results. Combined, these can lead to higher costs than paying for a high quality procedure in the first place.
It’s just not worth it
Does the cost of breast augmentation with Dr Anh seems out of reach? If so, we encourage you to consider finance options. Another options is to save up a bit longer. It’s worth it in order to afford good quality surgical care. In the end you’ll be glad you did. Don’t gamble with your health.
How long will breast implants last?
The lifespan of breast implants can vary greatly from person to person. However, the average is about ten years. Over time, implants will shift and wear down. Since this is the natural movement of the body. This means that all implants will need to be replaced at some point.
The quality of the implants is clearly linked to their longevity. Choosing a plastic surgeon you can trust to use only top quality products is critical.
If you want breast implants for the rest of your life, will have to replace them at least once. In many cases patients will need to replace the implants more than once. At any sign of your implants changing, see your doctor.
The history of breast enhancement:
The first silicone breast implant patient was a dog
Believe it or not, the first trial patient to receive a silicone breast implant, in 1962, was a dog named Esmerelda. The implant was left under the skin for several weeks. After this the implant was deemed to be “as harmless as water” and safe for implantation into human patients.
Experiments with implanting other objects and substances in the breasts.
So, the obsession with enlarging breasts had begun long before the silicone breast implant was invented.
- As early as the late 1800’s people were attempting breast augmentation with paraffin.
- In the 1920’s and 1930’s, doctors trialled moving fat from other parts of body to the breast.
- In the 1950’s polyurethane, cartilage, sponges, wood and glass balls were trialled as breast implant options
The first human to receive silicone breast implants
In 1962, Timmy Jean Lindsey was the first woman to receive silicone breast implants. She lived in Houston, Texas. Her doctors were medical pioneers eager to test their idea. They convinced her to undergo the trial operation. The operation was a success! Little did these doctors know the magnitude of their discovery. Breast enhancement is now one of the top cosmetic procedures in the world!

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation
It can be possible to breastfeed after breast enlargement. Many women do go on to breastfeed their children successfully. Your ability to breastfeed will be impacted by the type of surgery you have. You can't know if your breastfeeding will be affected until you try it. It's important to understand this before committing to surgery. You may be unable to meet your baby's needs and have to supplement. Some people worry that breastfeeding with silicone implants may be dangerous to the baby. This isn't so. There are no known dangers to mother or baby when breastfeeding with implants. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also cause the shape and size of the breasts to change. For this reason, women often wait until they are done having children to get breast implants.
All forms of surgery are associated with some discomfort. Breast surgery is no different. It is inevitable that you will experience some level of pain. However, the amount and type pain experienced will vary from person to person. There are several different causes of pain post breast enhancement surgery. The stretching of the skin can cause a pinching sensation. This will usually subside within several days. Implants placed under the muscle can cause spasms and cramps while the muscle stretches. This will continue until the muscle returns to normal functioning. This will happen faster the sooner the patient is up and moving around. These are the normal types of pain associated with breast enhancement. Other types of pain are much less common. Our patients tell us that the pain after breast enlargement is manageable. If you experience any abnormal pain after your surgery, contact Dr Anh right away.
The length of the surgery will vary from person to person depending on each unique case. However, an average breast implant surgery takes 1-2 hours in theatre.
The "recovery time" depends on what you consider to be fully recovered. We recommend you take 1 week off work after surgery. You should avoid vigorous activity for 4 weeks after surgery. Most pain will subside within the week after surgery. Soreness and swelling may continue for a few weeks. After your breast surgery our team will monitor your healing process.
All types of plastic surgery come with risks. It is important to us that each patient make an informed decision when going into surgery. This means understanding all potential risks and benefits. Dr Anh will ensure that you are completely informed before committing to surgery. You should also do your own research.
The cost of a breast enlargement will vary from person to person. This is affected by the specifics of your body and desired results. Dr Anh offers breast enhancement starting at $9,995.
We recommend that you don't wear bras with underwires for six weeks after surgery. Directly after surgery you will need to treat your breasts gently. Our team will provide you with specific instructions about what you are able to wear. After roughly six weeks you will be able to return to normal and wear whatever you like.
There is little scientific research into what should be worn after breast implant surgery. Each surgeon tends to have their own preferences based on what they have seen work. Dr Anh will clearly explain what she prefers you wear before you undergo surgery. Generally, you should avoid wearing anything that will displace the implants within their pockets before they have a chance to fully heal.
We recommend that you avoid any vigorous activity for at least four weeks after surgery. Exercising too soon after surgery can cause bruising, swelling and bleeding.
Patients who choose to have large implants placed may have back pain following surgery. The spine and muscles will take several weeks to adjust to the new weight. This will generally disappear after a few weeks.
A plastic surgeon is highly specialised in aesthetic surgery with minimum 12 years training. This training includes a fellowship of The Royal Australian College of Surgery. A cosmetic surgeon has less training. They may originate from any speciality or no speciality at all.
It is possible to get breast implants after a double mastectomy. However, this process is much more involved than a simple breast implant procedure. It will take multiple surgeries over an extended period of time.
