Anti Wrinkle Injections can prevent wrinkles from forming and are ideal as an anti-ageing treatment for ages between 25-45 years of age.

“There are two main causes of wrinkles: loss of collagen and ongoing movement of the facial muscles. Here at our clinic in the Crown Metropol Hotel in Burswood, we aim to treat both these causes using an effective anti-ageing treatment.” Dr Anh

Using Wrinkle Relaxers to Prevent Lines

Anti-wrinkle injections are also known as muscle or wrinkle relaxers (or relaxants). These injections are used to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles in unwanted areas when you look angry or smile by blocking nerve signals. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to smile or express yourself, it just means that movement is kept to a minimum so that deep expression lines don’t form and become permanent. The only time that a patient would ever have a “frozen” face is if too much relaxer was injected by an inexperienced practitioner, which would never be the case if you’re a patient of Dr Anh. All of the injectors are qualified and highly experienced.

Popular concerns and areas that are treated, include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Between the brows (frown lines)
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Fine lines under or surrounding the eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles

All of these areas can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers depending on how developed your lines are. For example, muscle relaxers are only used to prevent wrinkles from getting worse or developing into permanent wrinkles. Whereas dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used to treat permanent wrinkles or to create voluminous lips or cheeks.

Your clinician will be able to recommend which treatment is best for you during your obligation-free consultation.

Dermal fillers are used to increase volume in a certain area such as the cheeks or lips, while anti-wrinkle injections, aka wrinkle relaxers, are used to decrease muscle movement and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. While these two treatments are often seen as one and the same, this isn’t the case. However, they can be used at the same time if the patient wants to restore volume and decrease the appearance of expression lines.

Your clinician will provide you with a list of medications and supplements that you should avoid prior to your treatment as this can cause unnecessary bleeding and bruising, vitamin E & fish oil being two of them. Alcohol should also be avoided for several days.

Once the treated area has been prepped, several small injections will be administered into the muscle that’s responsible for certain wrinkles and expression lines. The entire treatment only lasts a few minutes, which means you can easily schedule it over your lunchbreak. There may be some slight bruising and swelling after your session but this will be mild and will subside relatively quickly. It is possible to use makeup to cover up any redness and bruising but only mineral makeup and clean brushes should be used to prevent infection.

There is very little discomfort during a wrinkle relaxer treatment. If you are worried about the injections, a topical anaesthetic can be applied to the area prior to treatment. Just be sure to set aside some additional time for this if you would prefer to use an anaesthetic as it takes 30 minutes to take effect.

Wrinkle relaxers will gradually take effect over the next week or two. Patients can expect to enjoy their results for three to six months, where after a repeat session will be required to maintain a more youthful appearance. Some patients may require top-up sessions sooner than others depending on whether the desired outcome was achieved the first time and how quickly the injection is metabolised. Once the effects of the wrinkle relaxers wear off, the area will be prone to the usual signs of ageing.

After your wrinkle-relaxer treatment, it’s important to give the injections time to settle. This means avoiding strenuous exercise and not touching or applying pressure to the treated area for at least two days. Sleeping in an elevated position on your back is also highly recommended for the first few days to prevent product migration – it will also help with any swelling. To prevent excess bruising, it’s also best to not consume too much alcohol for the first two days after your treatment. Staying hydrated and protecting your skin from the harsh rays of the sun will also help prolong the results of your treatment. If you need to fly soon after your session, know that this will be possible as changes in altitude won’t affect your results.

It’s best to wait at least 24 hours before you schedule minor treatments such as a surface facial. Any deeper skin treatments such as laser or chemical peels require more time. By scheduling treatments too soon, you could end up aggravating the area and cause the product to migrate. As previously mentioned, it is possible to receive fillers and wrinkle relaxers at the same time though because they are similar and treat different concerns. Speak to your clinician about any other treatments that you have in mind so that they can work with you on a personalised treatment plan.
