Fraxel Laser FAQs
This non-surgical treatment makes use of laser energy to target damaged skin. It creates tiny pixels of laser that penetrate deep into your skin. This stimulates your body’s natural healing process which increases the production of collagen. Aside from collagen, which helps repair your skin, new, healthy skin cells also migrate in the area. This process replaces old and damaged cells, resulting in fresh, radiant, and healthy skin.
You are a potential candidate for the treatment if:
- You don’t have bleeding or clotting disorder.
- You don’t have skin sensitivity.
- You have abnormal skin discoloration.
- You have acne scars.
- You have enlarged pores.
- You have loose or sagging skin.
- You have minor blemishes and wrinkles.
- You have realistic treatment goals.
- You have a rough, scaly patch on your skin.
- You have sunspots.
During your consultation, we will assess your skin condition and health history. This will help us determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
We do not recommend this treatment if you have the following:
- Active infections
- Cold sores
- Dermatitis
- Sunburn
- Poor wound healing
- Light-triggered seizures
Also, you are not a good candidate if you are taking acne medications or blood-thinners. We will thoroughly assess your condition during your consultation to prevent any complications.
This treatment can be performed in the following body areas:
- Abdomen
- Breasts
- Buttocks
- Chest
- Face
- Hands
- Hips
- Neck
- Thighs
During the procedure, you will wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. To prevent discomfort, we will apply a numbing cream to your skin. Once your skin is numb, we will glide a handheld laser device over the treatment area several times. This allows the device to deliver short bursts of laser energy into your skin.
This will depend on your skin condition, treatment goals, and the size of the body area. In general, the entire process can take 30 minutes to 1 hour.
It is suitable for all skin types because it is the gentlest of all the fractional lasers. This makes it an ideal treatment for those who don’t want to have aggressive laser treatments. During your consultation, we will assess your skin condition to see if you will benefit from the procedure.
Of course, this will depend on your skin condition and treatment goals. In general, you will need 3 to 5 treatment sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. We will discuss the number of treatments you will need after assessing your skin condition.
This treatment is ideal for patients age 25 to 60 who have different skin concerns. However, you must have good skin elasticity in order for the treatment to be effective.
The results of the treatment may vary from patient to patient. In general, your skin surface will feel smoother and look younger after 3 to 6 months. Significant improvements are noticeable once the deeper layers of your skin have healed.
Depending on your age and skin condition, the results of the treatment can last for several years. To maintain your younger-looking skin, you may need to undergo another treatment. This is because the procedure cannot prevent signs of skin aging.
The total costs of the treatment will depend on several factors such as the following:
- Size of the body area
- Skin condition
- The medical facility or clinic
- Your cosmetic surgeon’s fee
- Your desired results
During your consultation, we will provide you with a treatment plan based on your needs. We will also provide an accurate estimate of the total costs based on your treatment plan.
In most cases, your private health insurance will not cover the cost of your treatment. This is because the Fraxel laser is a form of cosmetic treatment. Talk to your insurer before the procedure to know if you are eligible for a health claim.
This procedure has the following risks and complications:
- Bleeding
- Burn injury
- Changes in skin colour and sensation
- Delayed wound healing
- Infection
- Itching
- Pain at the treated area
- Poor cosmetic results
- Redness
- Scarring
- Swelling
- Tiny white bumps on your skin
- Turning of the eyelid
To prevent infection, make sure that you don’t have any open wounds on the area to be treated. Using medications for acne should also be stopped a few weeks before your treatment. During your consultation, we will check your health history to see if there are factors that can affect the outcome of the treatment. These include your current medications, lifestyle, medical history, skin condition, and cosmetic goals.
