What is a double chin?
A double chin, also known as submental fat, occurs when a layer of fat forms beneath the chin and is characterised by an ill-defined chin and jawline, or the appearance of two chins.
Let’s face it. A double chin is a common concern and many of us have looked in the mirror and been frustrated by the sight of a double chin. While a submental fat is often associated with an increase in weight, you don’t need to be overweight to have one. In fact, even people who are careful with diet and exercise can struggle with stubborn fat under the chin and neck.
While nobody likes having excess fat around their neck and chin, submental chin fat can, unfortunately, be extremely difficult to reduce through diet and exercise alone.
What causes a double chin?
As mentioned, a double chin usually appears when a layer of fat forms beneath the chin, or when the skin below begins to sag. This can be brought on by a number of factors, including:
- Age – the skin begins to lose elasticity with age, which can lead to the appearance of extra, sagging skin that may contribute to the appearance of a double chin.
- Genetics – those with a family history of fat under the chin are more likely to develop a double chin themselves.
- Weight gain – while not always the sole cause, weight gain can contribute to the appearance of a double chin.
- Posture – poor posture can weaken the muscles of the chin and neck, which can result in a loss in elasticity and development of a double chin.
Looking to reshape your jawline? No matter the size of your double chin, we can redefine your chin area using a number of medical grade technologies. Here at Dr Anh’s Medispa, we offer a number of chin reduction treatments, including:
Fat dissolving injections
Fat dissolving treatments involve administering a series of injections made up of an active ingredient that occurs naturally in the body. This fat dissolving compound allows the body to safely metabolise and break down fat cells in the submental area. Once these fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store and accumulate fat.
Mesotherapy uses injections of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts and other chemicals to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. These injections work by permanently destroying fat cells under the chin, which in turn reduces the appearance of a submental chin fat.
Ultherapy treatments use ultrasound waves to tighten and lift the sagging skin and muscles that lead to a submental chin fat. By delivering heat to the deeper layers of skin, Ultherapy works to weaken collagen fibres. Your body will react by creating inflammation, replacing the previously damaged collagen with new, tighter collagen, leading to an improved double chin.
Exilis is a skin tightening treatment that combines ultrasound waves with radiofrequency technology. This allows heat to penetrate into the fat layer of the treated area, after which fat will go through a process of natural death and will be eliminated from the body.
The best treatment for you is dependant on a number of factors. By booking a consultation with Dr Anh, we can work together to develop a customised treatment plan to rejuvenate your appearance.
