What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a common, yet harmless skin condition characterised by the formation of lumps and dimples in the skin. While both men and women can develop cellulite, the condition is more common in females, due to the different distributions of fat, muscle and connective tissue. In fact, 80 to 90 percent of women will experience cellulite at some point in their lives.

Cellulite is most commonly found on the hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, breasts and upper arms. While the condition is not harmful, this condition can be unsightly and negatively impact your self esteem.

3 grades of cellulite

The severity of cellulite can be ranked using three grades:

Grade 1 (mild) is characterised by an ‘orange-peel’ appearance, with one to four superficial depressions in the skin

Grade 2 (moderate) is characterised by a ‘cottage cheese’ appearance, with five to nine medium-depth depressions in the skin

Grade 3 (severe) is characterised by a ‘mattress’ appearance, with ten or more deep depressions in the skin

What causes cellulite?

This skin condition is caused by a buildup of fat underneath the skin. While most women will experience it during their lifetime, some are more predisposed to it than others. Your genes, body fat percentage and the thickness of your skin are all factors that can determine how much cellulite you have and how noticeable it appears.

Other factors that can influence the development of this condition on the skin include:

  • Loss of collagen and elastin in the skin with age
  • Sun damage impacting the elasticity of the skin
  • Loss of circulation to an area
  • Oestrogen, which causes the female pattern of fat distribution
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics and family history
  • Weight gain and an inactive lifestyle

Our solutions

Cellulite is a notoriously difficult to treat condition. While there is no procedure available that can effectively remove all cellulite, we can visibly reduce its appearance on your skin using a number of medical-grade technologies. Here at Dr Anh’s Medispa, we offer a range of treatments, including:

Thermage is a skin and soft tissue device that uses radiofrequency energy to reduce the appearance of cellulite and to tighten, firm and rejuvenate the skin. During treatment, radiofrequency energy is used to gently heat the dermis layer of the skin, which stimulates collagen production and, in turn, reduces the appearance of this unpleasant skin condition.

Mesotherapy uses injections of vitamins, minerals, plant extracts and other chemicals to rejuvenate and tighten the skin. The ideal treatment for those who desire a minimally-invasive method for cellulite reduction, mesotherapy is best for mild degrees of this skin condition.

EnCurve is another radiofrequency based treatment that promotes skin tightening and fat reduction. Using controlled heatwaves, enCurve elevates collagen production and breaks down the fibres that cause cellulite, leaving you with smoother, tighter, more youthful looking skin.

The best way to determine which treatment is right for you is to book a consultation with Dr Anh. By doing so, together we can develop a personalised treatment plan to best suit your needs.
