What is a Breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves placing breast implants into the breast, either above or below the pectoral muscle, to increase the volume and projection of the breasts.
Dr Anh will discuss all the options available to you at your consultation, depending on the look you are trying to achieve, your lifestyle, personal preferences and what is suitable for your shape and build. Dr Anh will always keep you fully informed throughout all stages of your surgical planning and your procedure.
What’s involved in a Breast augmentation PROCEDURE?
Dr Anh will discuss all your options at your consultation. The specifics of your breast augmentation will depend on many factors:
- The look that you are trying to achieve
- Your lifestyle
- Personal preference
- What is suitable for your body shape and build
The first step is to establish if you are a candidate for breast surgery. Dr Anh will assess your reasons for wanting to undergo plastic surgery. Following Dr Anh’s assessment, you will receive a customised treatment plan.

What you can expect from Your consultation
Dr Anh understands that your initial consultation at her Perth practice can be daunting. After all, it is only natural to feel nervous about revealing your concerns with your body, especially with someone you have never met before. Dr Anh understands that you may feel this way and will try to make the consultation as comfortable for you as possible.
Dr Anh and her cosmetic consultants will spend about 60 minutes with you to better understand why you are seeking breast augmentation, the results you hope to achieve, and your expectations of the procedure. Dr Anh will obtain a medical and surgical history and then examine you. Based on what you hope to achieve and your breast dimensions, Dr Anh will select a range of breast implant sizes that you can gain a better idea of what you could look like after breast augmentation surgery.
Dr Anh will discuss in detail the procedure steps, recovery period and any risks associated with breast augmentation surgery. In addition, she will show you before and after images of previous breast surgery patients, answer any of your questions and provide you with written material about breast augmentation for you to take home. At the end of your consultation, you will be given a comprehensive quote, and our practice manager will explain all the costs involved with a boob job.
What happens during the procedure
During your breast augmentation procedure, Dr Anh will follow the below steps:
Step 1 – Administering anaesthesia
For your comfort and safety, Dr Anh always performs breast augmentation under general anaesthesia. We work with highly qualified and experienced anaesthetists who will administer your medication during the procedure.
Step 2 – Making an incision
During your breast augmentation consultation, Dr Anh will discuss your incision options. This may include making an incision under the breast fold, along the edge of the areola or in the armpit.
Step 3 – Inserting your breast implants
Once Dr Anh has made your incisions, she will create a pocket and place the implant either under or over the pectoral muscle. Again, Dr Anh will discuss this with you prior to surgery.
Step 4 – Closing the incisions
After your implants are inserted, Dr Anh will close your incisions with layered sutures in the breast tissue. Following the procedure, you will be moved into a recovery area to begin the healing process.
Choosing the right implants
Choosing the right implants for your body can be a process. In addition to the size of your implants, you will also need to decide on implant material, shape, surface, and profile. During your consultation with Dr Anh, you will discuss the different breast implant options available and choose between:
- Saline and silicone implants
- Round and anatomical implants
- Textured and smooth implants
- Low, moderate and high profile implants
What can I expect during my recovery
Following your breast augmentation, your breasts will be wrapped in dressings, and, if needed, drains may be inserted to collect any excess blood or fluid. Dr Anh will also give you a support bra to minimise swelling and support the breasts as they heal.
It is only normal to experience some pain, swelling and bruising after your breast augmentation. This may continue for a few weeks; however, our team will monitor your healing process.
The “recovery time” itself depends on what you consider to be fully recovered. We recommend that you take at least one week off work, and you should avoid vigorous activity for four weeks after surgery. For best results, it is important that you follow all of Dr Anh’s post-operative instructions carefully.

How much does Breat Augmentation cost in Perth?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to breast augmentation surgery, as the procedure can vary widely from patient to patient. As such, we simply cannot provide a cost without first seeing you for a personalised consultation. Dr Anh offers breast augmentation surgery starting at $9,995.
Similar to most surgical procedures, you can expect your boob job to be broken down into several cost components:
Initial consultation fees
When you first visit Dr Anh for a breast augmentation consultation at her Perth practice, you will need to pay a fee.
Surgeon’s fees
Surgeon’s fees can vary dramatically, depending on their qualifications, surgical expertise, professional recognition, experience and even popularity. The fee charged by Dr Anh to perform your breast augmentation will depend on the extent and difficulty of your procedure.
Hospital fees
Both surgeons and anaesthetists are considered “independent contractors” who use the facilities of private hospitals, meaning that Dr Anh has no control over your hospital fees. Again, hospital fees can vary from facility to facility, although most charge by the hour. Your breast augmentation hospital fee will likely comprise of the time spent in the operating theatre, as well as the time required to recover from anaesthesia. If an overnight stay is required, this will increase your costs significantly.
Anaesthetist’s fees
During your breast enlargement, your anaesthetist quite literally watches over your life and vital functions. The fee charged by your anaesthetist will depend again on their qualifications and experience.
Breast implant costs
The cost of your breast implants will depend on factors such as the brand, size, texture, and shape chosen. Dr Anh will help you choose the right implants during your consultation.
Post-operative care
In addition to the actual procedure costs, you may also need to pay out of pocket for compression garments and post-operative visits.
As breast augmentation is usually performed for cosmetic reasons, it is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Dr Anh and her team will give you a detailed breakdown of breast enhancement costs during your consultation.

During your breast augmentation, Dr Anh will make one of three incisions: inframammary, periareolar and transaxillary.
Inframammary incision
The inframammary incision is the most popular and commonly performed method of implant placement. This incision is made in the crease underneath the breast, allowing for discreet scarring. In addition, this approach provides the easiest insertion of the implant in the pocket and has a lower risk of complications.
Periareolar incision
The periareolar approach involves making a semicircular incision around the lower half of the areola. While this incision may be the least visible, it comes at the cost of increased risks, such as the loss of sensation in the nipples and the inability to breastfeed.
Transaxillary incision
The transaxillary technique involves making an incision and inserting implants through the armpit. This is the least commonly used technique, although it does offer benefits to patients of colour as it limits the risk of keloid scarring.
All forms of surgery are associated with some discomfort. Breast surgery is no different. You will inevitably experience some level of pain. However, the amount and type of pain experienced will vary from person to person. There are several different causes of pain following breast enhancement surgery. The stretching of the skin can cause a pinching sensation. This will usually subside within several days. Implants placed under the muscle can cause spasms and cramps while the muscle stretches. This will continue until the muscle returns to normal functioning. This will happen faster the sooner the patient is up and moving around. These are the standard types of pain associated with breast enhancement. Other types of pain are much less common. Our patients tell us that the pain after breast enlargement is manageable. If you experience any abnormal pain after your surgery, contact Dr Anh right away.
We recommend that you avoid any vigorous activity for at least four weeks after surgery. Exercising too soon after surgery can cause bruising, swelling, and bleeding.
Breast augmentation is designed to increase breast volume and improve breast shape. While the procedure can address some mild drooping, it is not designed to reposition the breasts. If you are concerned by both the size and position of your breasts, you may choose to combine your breast augmentation with a lift. This is a far more complicated procedure and may increase costs and recovery times.
While you can expect to enjoy your breast augmentation results for a long time, breast implants are not lifelong devices and will need to be removed or replaced eventually. The average silicone implants may last anywhere from 10 to 20 years; however, we recommend visiting Dr Anh’s Implant Care Clinic for clinical imaging every two to three years.
All types of plastic surgery come with risks. It is important to us that each patient make an informed decision when going into surgery. This means understanding all potential risks and benefits. Dr Anh will ensure that you are completely informed before committing to surgery. You should also do your own research.
It can be possible to breastfeed after breast enlargement. Many women do go on to breastfeed their children successfully. Your ability to breastfeed will be impacted by the type of surgery you have. You can’t know if your breastfeeding will be affected until you try it. It’s important to understand this before committing to surgery. You may be unable to meet your baby’s needs and have to supplement. Some people worry that breastfeeding with silicone implants may be dangerous to the baby. This isn’t so. There are no known dangers to mother or baby when breastfeeding with implants. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also cause the shape and size of the breasts to change. For this reason, women often wait until they are done having children to get breast implants.
Deciding on the right implant shape is another major consideration when undergoing breast augmentation. Implants are available in both a round and anatomical (teardrop) shape.
Round Implants
Round implants are, as the name suggests, round in shape. Such implants offer a fuller look with added cleavage and are often the preferred choice of women pursuing a more augmented look with a lot of upper breast fullness.
Anatomical Implants
Anatomical implants have a teardrop-like shape and are typically considered to be more versatile, shaping the breast tissue to a greater extent. They can be chosen for a number of reasons, such as to provide contrast between the shape of the upper and lower breast, to address shape issues or to improve breast laxity.
Implants can have either a smooth or textured surface.
Textured Implants
Textured implants can be described as having a rough outer shell. There are a number of benefits to this, as textured implants prevent implant movement and reduce the risk of capsular contracture. For this reason, all anatomical implants are textured to reduce the chance of implant rotation. If you decide to go with round implants, however, you will have a choice between the two surface types.
Smooth Implants
On the other hand, smooth implants have a smooth outer shell and feel softer than their textured counterparts. However, smooth implants do have an increased risk of moving out of position, particularly down and out towards the side of the chest, which could result in the need for revision surgery.
Every invasive surgical procedure has risks. In particular, some of the potential complications associated with breast augmentation include:
- Anaesthesia complications
- Changes in breast sensation
- Fluid accumulation
- Excessive bleeding
- Poor scarring
- Infection
- Breast asymmetry
- Implant rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
- Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
Dr Anh will discuss all potential risks during your consultation so that you can make an educated decision to proceed with surgery.
Prior to your breast augmentation surgery, Dr Anh will give you a comprehensive list of pre-operative instructions. To optimise healing, you should strive to be as fit as possible before surgery. Dr Anh may ask you to adjust some medications, and you must stop smoking at least six weeks beforehand.
It is also a great idea to set up a recovery area in your home and pre-prepare some healthy meals. You should also arrange for a friend or relative to drive you home from the hospital and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.
There are three main options for placing the implants in the breast: in front of the pectoral muscle, behind the pectoral muscle, or partially.
Submuscular placement
Submuscular placement involves positioning the implants under the pectoral muscle, which often yields more natural results, as the implants appear less visible and palpable. Additionally, a submuscular placement has a lower risk of capsular contracture, and mammographies will be easier to perform.
Subglandular placement
Subglandular placement involves positioning the implants in front of the pectoral muscle and under the breast tissue. While this is a more straightforward, less painful procedure, there is a greater risk of capsular contracture. As implants placed in front of the muscle are more visible and easier to feel through the skin, this position is better suited to patients who already have a sufficient amount of breast tissue.
Dual plane placement
The dual plane technique involves placing the upper portion of an implant under the pectoral muscle and the lower half directly underneath the breast tissue. This technique provides the most natural-looking appearance and is ideal for patients who choose teardrop shaped implants.
We understand and appreciate how having an all-female surgical team can be important for some patients. However, this does require additional coordination between the hospitals, anaesthetists and our clinic and can sometimes add additional wait time until your surgery. With this in mind, having an all-female surgical team is something that we are definitely able to arrange; simply mention this to Dr Anh during your scheduled consultation and our friendly surgical team will make the necessary arrangements.
The length of the surgery will vary from person to person, depending on each unique case. However, an average breast implant surgery takes one to two hours in theatre.
We recommend that you don’t wear bras with underwires for six weeks after surgery. Directly after surgery, you will need to treat your breasts gently. Our team will provide you with specific instructions about what you are able to wear. After roughly six weeks, you will be able to return to normal and wear whatever bra you like.
There is little scientific research into what should be worn after breast implant surgery. Each surgeon tends to have their own preferences based on what they have seen work. Dr Anh will clearly explain what she prefers you wear before you undergo surgery. Generally, you should avoid wearing anything that will displace the implants within their pockets before they have a chance to heal fully.
A plastic surgeon is highly specialised in aesthetic surgery with a minimum of 12 years of training, including a fellowship of The Royal Australian College of Surgery. A cosmetic surgeon has less or no training. They may originate from any speciality or no speciality at all. To ensure your safety and to achieve optimal results, we implore that you only ever see a FRACS accredited Plastic Surgeon when considering breast surgery.
It is possible to get breast implants after a double mastectomy. However, this process is much more involved than a simple breast implant procedure. It will take multiple surgeries over an extended period of time.
Today, all modern breast implants have a rubberised silicone outer shell, regardless of the fill material used. There are two types of fill material available: saline and silicone.
Saline Implants
Saline implants involve inserting a silicone shell into the body and filling it to its desired volume with saline. These implants are known to cause a ripple effect for some patients and, for this reason, may not be ideal for patients with smaller amounts of breast tissue, as this rippling may be visible through the breast skin. Regardless, saline implants are rarely used in Australia anymore.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are designed to have a more natural look and feel, being comparable to natural breast tissue. These implants have a far lower incidence of rippling and are the preferred choice amongst most Australian plastic surgeons.
The profile of a breast implant refers to how far an implant projects forward from the chest wall when standing. As such, implants of the same size that have different widths will produce different levels of projection. Implants are available in numerous different profiles, such as low profile, moderate profile, and high profile.
Low Profile
Low profile implants are relatively flat in appearance and only minimally project the chest. This is often the ideal type of implant for women with wider chests.
Moderate Profile
Moderate profile implants provide, as the name suggests, a moderate amount of projection. Such implants often yield the most natural-looking results and are ideal for women with smaller or narrower chests.
High Profile
High profile implants are very narrow at the base in order to provide maximum projection. These implants provide the fullest, most rounded results, which is often ideal for petite women with a narrow chest wall, although they may look less natural on other patients.

A word of caution on
Overseas cosmetic
surgery

“The money you save on a cheaper breast augmentation procedure is at risk of being spent tenfold.”
We repair a lot of botched jobs
Some breast surgery patients have opted for cheap procedures overseas. Unhappy with the results, they come in to have their botched boob jobs repaired. There can be many health risks of having cosmetic surgery abroad.
The medical risks
Many countries’ medical regulations aren’t as strict as Australia’s. These regulations exist to keep you safe and healthy. Having a breast enlargement in a less sterile environment increases the risk of infection. Even scarier, your surgeon may not have trained to perform the surgery. You can end up with results far from what you had envisioned. We have all heard the horror stories of things going wrong with cosmetic surgery tourism:
- People losing their nipples
- Terrible infections
- Allergic reactions to cheap products
- Even death
While you may save now, but you’ll pay later
If that’s not enough to deter you, consider that you could end up spending way more money. The money you save on a cheaper breast augmentation procedure is at risk of being spent tenfold. It’s expensive dealing with medical complications of an incorrectly done surgery. Therefore it’s also expensive to repair botched results. Combined, these can lead to higher costs than paying for a high quality procedure in the first place.
It’s just not worth it
Does the cost of breast augmentation with Dr Anh seems out of reach? If so, we encourage you to consider finance options. Another options is to save up a bit longer. It’s worth it in order to afford good quality surgical care. In the end you’ll be glad you did. Don’t gamble with your health.
