Nip, Tuck And Repair Your Abdomen

After pregnancy or weight loss, many people struggle to get the flatter stomach they desire.

This may be because of excess skin and stubborn fat tissue remaining after the bulk of the work is done, because of damaged abdominal muscles, or a combination of both. Luckily, thanks to modern medicine, both these issues can be corrected through an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

If you have lost a significant amount of weight, tummy tuck surgery not only reveals your true weight loss achievements but also relieves you of the burden of carrying around the extra skin that is no longer needed. While it is not a remedial procedure, tummy tucks have been proven to contribute to the relief of back pain, and by repairing damaged abdominal muscles, it re-equips patients with a core they can strengthen.

What are core muscles?

Core muscles are the muscles in your mid-section, both in your abdomen and in your back. These muscles are responsible for holding you up and also provide insulation for your internal organs.

Weak core muscles can lead to many health and cosmetic issues including bad posture, a protruding belly (even after weight-loss), balance issues, lower back pain and the appearance of being larger than you actually are. Core muscles provide stability to the other muscles in your body and allow your body to work in harmony.

The abdomen is an important part of your core and if your abdominal muscles are weak or damaged, they could put pressure on your back muscles causing back pain and also lead to other unpleasant side effects.

How abdominal muscles can be damaged

Abdominal muscles stretch and move to make space for a growing baby during pregnancy. Similarly, overweight people carrying a lot of weight in the abdominal area can damage their abdominal muscles causing diastasis recti. Diastasis recti is an abnormal separation between the muscles that run along the midline of your abdomen. Diastasis means separation, and recti refer to the rectus abdominis muscles.

On top of the apron of excess skin and stubborn fat often left behind after weight loss and pregnancy, damage to the abdominal muscles can lead to a protrusion of the belly that does not go away with normal diet and exercise, and can instead cause you discomfort.

During a tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are exposed and can be tightened and reverted to their natural position where they are most beneficial to the body and can be effectively strengthened through exercise.

Can a tummy tuck contribute to a stronger core?

Although the purpose of a tummy tuck is cosmetic, an anecdotal observation has been made by many patients that the repositioning and repairing of their abdominal wall have contributed to their core strength allowing them to not only further enhance their weight loss results, but also allow their core to engage and function as it should.

Tummy tuck procedure

Although tummy tucks are sometimes considered a weight loss procedure, they are generally performed on patients who have already lost the weight surgically or otherwise. Tummy tucks are often done in conjunction with liposuction which is the surgical removal of fat, which then exposes excess skin and may even reveal damaged abdominal muscles.

Depending on the needs of an individual patient a full tummy tuck which includes the reparation and re-positioning of abdominal muscles may be recommended, or a mini tummy tuck where only excess skin and fat are removed.
